About Us: Center Expertise: Communications and Publishing

Communications staff members provide expert assistance on a wide range of communications challenges and needs. They offer guidance in developing strategic communications plans and core messages for the Center and for individual projects that enable staff members to communicate effectively about research findings with their target audiences. This group manages a full range of communications, marketing and media services to inform Center audience groups.

Media Relations and marketing. Center staff compose press releases, convene press conferences, and maintain media relations and information on the Center's website. The team also develops brochures and other collateral material to communicate complex or technical materials to lay audiences.

Research dissemination. The Center's research program includes broad dissemination of health policy research data and analysis. The communications team works with researchers and other project managers to plan and implement a dissemination strategy for each Center study and research project. The plan can include print publication, electronic publishing on the web, live presentations, conference exhibits, and media communications.

Research and policy briefings, forums, and seminars. The communications team develops and convenes policy briefings for individuals and organizations involved in policymaking to highlight research that informs health-related policy debates and dialogue. Policy forums are directed toward community-based audiences; seminars are oriented towards an academic audience and are open to the public.

Public education. The Center designs and implements targeted public education campaigns to raise awareness of issues related to health policy. For example, in spring 2001, the Center launched a campaign throughout California to introduce individuals and community groups to the California Health Interview Survey. The campaign brought attention among potential survey participants to the CHIS 2001 data collection.

Speaker services. Center senior staff members and affiliated faculty are experienced speakers and presenters at public health conferences, legislative meetings, public policy events, research symposia and community activities. As part of our research dissemination and public service activities, the Center does all it can to fulfill to as many requests as possible.

Publishing. The communications staff coordinates all phases of the publication process including consultations with authors on content, editing or restructuring of manuscripts, and proofreading as well as detailed input on all aspects of manuscript development, artwork and graphics.
