Health DATA >> About Data & Democracy 2008-2009

The Data & Democracy Statewide Training Initiative consists of two complementary projects, Data & Democracy and Datos y Democracia. This initiative aims to build the capacity of California community-based organizations to plan and conduct a community assessment for use with program planning, advocacy, and other local decision-making. Target populations include representatives of community-based organizations and advocacy networks addressing health disparity issues impacting low income, immigrant, and underserved ethnic populations. Participants learn how to plan and conduct workshops in their community in order to teach others how to perform a community assessment.

Data & Democracy includes Health DATA's Performing a Community Assessment Train the Trainer Courses, Skill Clinics, and Regional Convenings for project participants and other community members. Participants build knowledge and skills for engaging in a collaborative community assessment planning process, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting assessment findings. Data & Democracy will be conducted in Greater Los Angeles, Inland Empire, Fresno/Central Valley, Humboldt/Northern Coast areas.

Datos y Democracia will develop and evaluate a new Train the Trainer course, Introduction to Health Data, designed for monolingual Spanish language populations. Participants will learn how to access and apply data to program development and policy advocacy. Datos y Democracia will be conducted Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

The Data & Democracy Statewide Initiative is supported through grants from The California Endowment (TCE) and The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF).
